چکیده
This lagrangian is, of course, invariant under SO(N), rotations of φ in the N dimensional internal space. φj(x) → Ojkφk(x), with O an orthogonal matrix, which leaves ∑ φ invariant. Notice that the mass term has the wrong sign. Had that sign been minus, with a + in the potential energy, the potential’s absolute minimum would have been at ~ φ = 0, the classical vacuum would be at ~ φ = 0, and the rotational symmetry would be intact. But with the plus in the lagrangian, ~ φ = 0 is a local maximum of the potential energy, and not a classical ground state. Instead a classical lowest energy state will have ~ φ = ~ φ0 with φ0 := |~ φ0| = μ/ √ λ. To get a state of lowest energy, we need not only that V (φ) is minimized at each point x, but also that the kinetic energy (~ ∇φ)2 is minimized, which means vanishing. So although the potential only tells us that ~ φ(x) should lie on a sphere of radius φ0, minimizing the energy means it has to be the same ~ φ throughout space. If we apply a global SO(N) transformation, we get a new state which is of the same energy as our state ~ φ0, but which has an overlap with ~ φ0(x) at every point which is less that one, so that raised to the infinite power from

A note on the Higgs particles
It is suggested that within the effective potential approach, convexity and spontaneous symmetry breaking(SSB) make the Higgs modes (elementary or effective) complicated in that the normal final states (experimentally identifiable) for Higgs modes could not be analytically defined. This observation might have quite some nontrivial consequences for the Standard Model (SM) and particle physics. P...
متن کاملOn the utility and implication of convex effective potential for the Higgs particles
It is suggested that from an alternative point of view, the convex full effective potential (EFP) might also be useful. A convex EFP with spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) make the Higgs modes (elementary or effective) complicated in that the normal final states (experimentally identifiable) for Higgs modes could not be analytically defined. This observation might have some nontrivial consequ...

متن کاملLongitudinal/Goldstone Boson Equivalence and Phenomenology of Probing the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking ∗
We formulate the Equivalence between the longitudinal weak-boson and the Goldstone boson as a criterion for sensitively probing the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism and develop a precise power counting rule for chiral Lagrangian formulated electroweak theories. With these we semi-quantitatively analyze the sensitivities to various effective operators related to electroweak symmetry break...
متن کاملConfinement of Higgs bosons from hidden symmetry and convexity
In the full effective potential (EFP) approach, we find that the fact of spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) can, with the help of the rigorous convexity of the full EFP, lead to the prediction of the IR confinement of Higgs particles, adding difficulty for the experimental identification of Higgs particles unlike the electroweak gauge bosons. We do not specify the explicit form of the Higgs se...
